This image is a cropped photo of Fernand Leger's painting titled "Composition aux Trois Profils" (Composition with Three Profiles) executed in 1937. The present work belongs to Léger's most abstract series founded on this contrast, and it anticipates the artist's development over the next decade. His fascination with the composition intensified in 1937, a highly productive year in which he made seven variations of the painting. The present painting – and the other versions from that year – have an unprecedented complexity of form, exuberance of movement and brilliance of color.

This image represents a painting by Kandinskt, titled, Voisinage, executed in 1939. The present work is an important composition from the artist's last great abstract period. The elements that build up Voisinage echo forms from the animal kingdom, such as the amoeba-like structures along the lower edge of the painting and the whale-shaped pink mass with its fish tail that dominates the center of the composition. This organic affinity imbues the painting with a wonderfully playful character and a vibrant sense of optimism and affirmation.
